You can reduce the chances of having to call for roadside assistance by taking 10 minutes each week to do some basic checks at home.

Engine oil: Use the dip-stick to check the oil level.

Radiator: Check the coolant level while the radiator is cold and check the hoses.

Battery: Top up with distilled water if necessary.

Tyres: Check for abnormal wear and places without tread. Measure the pressures with your own gauge when the tyres are cold.

Fan belt: Check it is not loose or cracked.

If you are driving in extreme conditions, your car should be checked every day.

If your car starts using more fuel or oil than usual, or if it leaves oil or coolant on the driveway, or it is difficult to start, or feels to be running roughly, do not ignore these warning signs.
